Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Managing Your Supply Chain Using Microsoft Axapta: A Book ExcerptPart One: Sales and Operations Planning

Managing Your Supply Chain Using Microsoft Axapta provides an overall understanding of how the system fits together to run a manufacturing or distribution business. This book excerpt focuses on running the business from the top with sales and operations planning (S&OP). Variation in operations affect the S&OP process and the nature of demand impacts the S&OP game plans.

definition of supply planning  process starts with the definition of all demands for the firm's goods and services. It formulates game plans that drive supply chain activities to meet those demands. Hence, an effective S&OP game plan requires consideration of both demands and supplies. The nature of each product's game plan depends on the environment. The game plan may focus on stocked end-items in distribution and make-to-stock manufacturing environments. The game plan for a make-to-order manufactured product depends on the level of Read More

A Modern Tale of Long (Supply Chain) Tails -- Part III

Part II of this blog series explained ToolsGroup’s value proposition for achieving service level excellence in distribution environments. The point of the Service Optimizer 99+ (SO99+) suite's name is that a "99+ percentage" represents the gold standard in customer service levels, and it takes a product purposely built to achieve service level excellence and to support such a high standard

definition of supply planning  becomes “intermittent.” Using this definition, ToolsGroup’s research shows that most brick-and-mortar companies (and not only e-tailers, as one might think) are also facing an increasingly long tail environment. This is because they are dealing with far more SKUs and slow-moving items with lumpy, unpredictable demand patterns. This creates difficulties for these companies since, as AMR Research’s analyst Lora Cecere concludes in her report mentioned in Part I  of this blog series, entitled “Of Read More
