Concepts being further developed go through a series of prescribed steps, each of which must be successfully completed before the decision makers release it to the next phase. Each company can decide which concept data to use when evaluating the progress of a project. Data is stored centrally, and each person involved in the project can access the data needed for his or her role. At the end of the project,

Apriso is already including access to a 3D model of whatever part that a shop floor worker is currently working on at their station. But what makes this valuable is when a quality defect is detected, the worker can then use a mouse and PC to make a specific annotation right on the image of exactly where the defect occurred, as well as including a reason code and description of Read More

A "Gentler" Giant's Success in Reaching Out to the "Little Guys"

Until recently, the few leaders in the lower end of the technology and platform market have hardly had any viable competition. However, Oracle is determined to give these players—especially archrival Microsoft—a run for their money, starting with offerings attractive to small to medium businesses and partners alike.

It's the Aftermarket Service, Stupid! (Part I)

Regardless of the economic environment (and sentiments), I always think of the opportunity within the aftermarket service and support as a profitable, high-margin and customer-captive business, and yet, still underserved. General Electric (GE) would be the proverbial example of a company that has focused on aftermarket opportunities, going so far as to call itself a "services" company as opposed

Product Lifecycle Management Challenges: From Solution Evaluation to Kickoff

In future, companies will be releasing products practically every other day, due to fierce global competition, and the significance of product lifecycle management (PLM) implementation will increase. However, it is possible to provide some guidelines for a rigorous PLM implementation.

This will improve the organization's capability to solve many small issues that might arise after implementation. i) Selection of the team The selection of the team is an important first step. One needs to see what kind of core software the vendor is using in the PLM system (such as Java, .Net, C++, and so on). Organizational resources experienced in that technology should be selected. This will ensure that learning happens faster. Once they start learning about the new Read More

Key Metrics for Monitoring New Product Development

Since our research-driven beginnings, Johnson & Johnson Advanced Sterilization Products (ASP) has continually improved the new product development (NPD) process. Detailed process mapping has revealed three tiers of business metrics, starting with drivers and moving up through execution metrics to business performance metrics. When driver metrics improves, so does business performance. Six Sigma tools helps identify specific metrics at all tiers and the causality linkages among them. Each NPD process step at ASP results in a deliverable, and each deliverable relates to a trade-off triangle (cost-time-resources) and, ultimately, to investment dollars. To track performance, ASP calculates how actual NPD decisions and what-if scenarios affect deliverables, alter investment triangles, and thereby influence business results. ASP uses similar process and tools, including the investment triangles and Six Sigma QFD, to make idea management decisions. The IDweb real-time software environment enables both the NPD and idea management processes at ASP. By deploying the strategic planning, idea management, portfolio and pipeline management, process management, and resource management modules of IDweb, ASP has increased throughput by 20 percent and reduced cycle time by 40 percent.

Product Developers Need to Shift to an All-Digital Mindset

Over the past several decades, processes to design and build cars, airplanes, and other products have typically followed a linear, sequential path. But the inefficient flow of information has frequently led to delays in product delivery. To remedy the situation, product development groups are shifting to a more holistic digital mindset using digital business models, processes, and tools. By embracing digital like never before, product developers can become fully integrated digital businesses and, therefore, well positioned to be more competitive.
